What blood glucose monitor do you use, and why do you prefer it?

Kevin asked:

Just curious what other people use and why? I’ve had quite a few meters by now due to changing insurance plans by changing jobs, etc.

My personal favorite was the Freestyle Flash for two reasons. The Flash has an LED that lights up the strip so it’s very easy to test in low light conditions. It also ‘loads’ the blood on the side of the strip rather than the end, so you don’t have to twist your fingers around as much.

Blood sugar testing?

Monday, August 3rd, 2009
Emily Mel asked:

does the amount of blood on the test strip affect the results?
because my results were ridiculous… I mean… Its possible… But he number I got was pretty bad. Just wondering!
let me see if this changes your mind…
it was 23….. Um…. !
I mean I felt pretty bad.. But I think you pretty much have to feel like death… And then I ate a pack of pop tarts… That’s 2.
got in the shower, blow dried my hair, then checked it again and it was 96… And there is a check strip that makes sure that it is functioning.. And it is….. What’s up?! Was it right?

Does a steroid shot raise blood sugar in a non-diabetic?

Sunday, August 2nd, 2009
Happi asked:

Today I received a steroid shot in the muscle to relieve inflammation of acute bronchitis. I experienced excessive sweating so I checked my blood sugar and it was 235. I double checked it and made sure the meter/strips were calibrated. The only thing I have read about the increase in blood sugar is for a diabetic. My normal fasting blood sugar is 80-95. When will it return to normal?
Thanks for all the help.
