Katie K asked: I am a 25 year old with Grave’s disease (and after radiation, I am hypothyroid). My father is a Type 1 diabetic.
Lately I’ve been getting horrible headaches and occasional dizzy spells. I have switched to water recently, and drink probably 190-250 oz every day. One day a couple of weeks ago, at the onset of a headache, I checked my blood sugar and it was 213. So, I went to buy some more strips and started keeping track of my sugars after that. Some days it stays close to the normal range. Most mornings, my fasting glucose is under 100 (it has been as high as 131 in the morning). But, some days I go through blood sugar hell.
A few weeks ago, I was feeling weak so I stopped for an oreo McFlurry. I started to feel sick after only eating about a third of it, so I put it down. At about 20 minutes, I started to get a headache, so I checked my glucose and it was 191. At 45 minutes it was 276, at 1 hr 15 min it was 161, at 2 hours it was 80, and at 2 hr 25 minutes it was 55. I was feeling horrible at that point, so I ate a few peanut butter crackers and went to bed. The next morning, it was 80 fasting.
I went to the doctor last week, and he checked my sugar (I had eaten 2 hours before) and it was 164. 6 weeks before my glucose was registered at 73. He will draw a fasting and an A1C this coming Monday. He basically told me that Type 1 is based on the urine, and that to diagnose diabetes at all my fasting has to be above 126 or he has to catch it above 200.
Is it normal to have some days with normal blood sugars and some days that are just off?
Is this the beginning of Type 1 diabetes - where my pancreas is working but not consistently working?
What causes the sugar to spike so high but then to crash?
With my dad being a Type 1 diabetic, and my already having an autoimmune disorder, I have the feeling I am starting to get Type 1 vs Type 2 diabetes. Does Type 2 see a fast drop? In my mind, I think “insulin resistant” would mean that if your blood sugar goes up to 276 it would take a longer amount of time to go down to normal. Whereas, it seems like during my episode of hyperglycemia, my body had a slow response to kicking out the insulin, but when it did pump it out - it dropped fast.
Has anyone else had this problem?
