Why so many free blood glucose meter give-aways?

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009
Jim asked:

I understand why the manufacturers give away the meters, because they make their money off the test strips. But why is everybody else promoting the meters and giving them away, from doctors to nurses, to diabetes educators? Do the health care providers get paid by manufacturers to promote the meters?

Why do blood glucose test strips require coding?

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009
Brian D asked:

Many blood glucose testing strips require that a code be entered into the meter that is indicated on the test strip container. I have no idea why this is required. Plus, what makes such a tiny piece of plastic worth $1 a strip?!

I got a question about the urine and blood tests that the OB Nurse takes the first time?

toralm1 asked:

I am 7 weeks pregnant now and tomorrow will be my first appt with the OB Nurse. I called the receptionist today to ask about what they take the urine and blood tests for. Receptionist checked with one nurse and told me that the urine is done for any bladder infections, and the blood tests are done for anemia, sugars, see how much iron we have, basically tells them what tests they will have to administer of mine in this pregnancy.
I asked if they determine pregnancy, then receptionist said that they already know I am pregnant and don’t take the urine and blood to determine that. I did ask the receptionist to make sure I can take a urine test that proves to them I am pregnant, she said yes she can give me a strip tester and I can pee on it. Is that all that you ladies remember from that first nurse checkup?

How do one touch ultra testing strips work?

Friday, July 24th, 2009
River asked:

i opened the machine and there seems to be two electrodes that run between the blood and i guess the computer does the equation. It seems the strip just acts as a plate for the blood. Can anyone tell me if this is correct or if the strip itself has some chemical on it, etc. Thanks

I have been feeling like I was getting an UTI , fever, frequency urinating, buring, ect. At first signs I started taking 3 (1680mg) cranberry pills 3x daily, drinking water, taking cycstic and goldenseal root and echinacea for over a week, now I just used an AZO test strip and it showed positive for wbc’s in urine at the darkest level. I wanted to get better without prescription medicines because I do not have insurance. Can anyone help?

Lady problem question. Menstrual blood on the mattress?

Friday, July 24th, 2009
Rainbow_Crayon asked:

I work 3rd shift and my baby sitter often sleeps on my bed. I was stripping the sheets this evening so I could wash them, and I found a rather large redish brownish spot on my mattress. *large as in, circumference of a normal coffee cup*
It wasn’t hard to guess that it was menstural blood.
I’m not going to say anything to her, she probably knows it’s there.. and is too embarressed to say anything. I’ve got black sheets or I would have noticed before, Eaither way, I’ve got a pillow top mattress, does anyone have any ideas on how to get this stain out??

Testing with 2 drops of blood on the same strip?

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009
Lacey’s Mom :-) asked:

Ok we “poked” my daughters finger and was about to put it on the strip but I figured there wouldnt be enough blood so we tried to squeeze more but couldnt get any. So we just pricked another finger and and added that blood to the strip. It read 205. So just out of curiosity and I decided to check again using only one finger and a different meter. This time I got 120…this is a huge difference. Should I just assume that its actually 120 and that 2 drops of blood give a false reading? Or did her body bring it down that much in a matter of 5 minutes? Thanks!

Is there a diabetes testing meter that does not require test strips?

SaberFireTiger asked:

I am looking for a testing meter for my aunt that doesn’t require you to give a blood sample. I’d appreciate any help.
Thanks everyone for the answers. My aunt is in Vietnam so there isn’t a thing such as medicare or any of that. That is why we are trying to get something here and send it over. Thanks again.
