Overpriced diabetic supplies?

Friday, February 27th, 2009
SppeedRacer asked:

I know that it costs pennies to make diabetes strips. But, I don’t want to use cheap chinese meters and I have to pay out of pocket. Are there any good quality meters and are inexpensive. I heard that the Keynote is a good one and is less painful? Does any have any experience with this meter.

I would like to know where I could donate my unused lancets for diabetes testing?

tagsfan asked:

I cannot find any local charities that will take the unused lancets. I get them free with my payment for the test strips. I do not use a new lancet for every test, so therefore, I have 3 boxes that have never been opened. I do not want to throw them away.

So confused about the gestational diabetes carb diet! HELP PLEASE?

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009
NINA asked:

This is so confusing. I need to know if this is alright. I just started my gestational diabetes low-carb diet. My three meals a day range from 30-45g of carbs while my three snacks range from 15-30g of carbs. I don’t want to keep eating just turkey sandwiches and fruits and vegetables. Would it be ok if I ate the following, as long as it is within carbohydrate guidelines?

For example ..
(3) chicken strips from Sheetz w/ nacho cheese - 26g carbs, no sugar
Grilled chicken wrap from Sheetz w/ cheddar cheese, cooked peppers & onions, bacon, & tomatoes - 31g carbs, 3g sugars
McChicken from McDonald’s w/o the bun, mayo, & lettuce (just the plain chicken patty) - 10g carbs

Can I eat this stuff (obviously not at the same meal or anything) since it’s within the carb guidelines I am supposed to follow?
Also .. some more examples .. not that I want to eat this stuff daily or anything, just using these as examples ..
Low Carb Options (each under 10g* of carbs):
• Low Carb WHOPPER® Sandwich* • (3g)
• Low Carb WHOPPER® Sandwich w/ cheese* • (5g)
• Low Carb DOUBLE WHOPPER® Sandwich* • (3g)
• Low Carb DOUBLE WHOPPER® Sandwich w/ cheese* • (5g)
• Low Carb WHOPPER JR.® Sandwich* • (1g)
• Low Carb WHOPPER JR.® Sandwich w/ cheese* • (2g)
• Low Carb BK™ Double Stacker Sandwich* (5g)
• Low Carb BK™ Triple Stacker Sandwich* (6g)
• Low Carb BK™ Quad Stacker Sandwich* (6g)

(They all come without the bun!)
My numbers weren’t that bad they said, they didn’t give me exacts though, I’m going to ask them next time I go in. I’m not asking you to verify if my diet is good — I just want to know if I am counting carbs for a diabetic diet could I eat this stuff since the carbs are within guidelines? Obviously not for every meal every day, but maybe one meal a week or something like that.

Just to add — my levels today were -
Fasting - 81
1 hour after breakfast - 103
1 hour after lunch - 105
(didn’t have dinner yet .. and YES my doctor has me monitor ONE hour after a meal, not two!)

How does it feel to have your membranes stripped to get your labor started?

bddrawson@sbcglobal.net asked:

I am 36.5 weeks pregnant. I am going to be taken early because my baby is big due to gestional diabetes. I just dont know how early. I will be full term thursday, and I saw the dr today. When I had my exam, it really hurt. I think he tried to strip my membranes, but I am not sure. When he examined me, it was painful on the right side and then he moved to the left and it didnt hurt like it did the first. When I was preg with my first, I think he did the same thing, and sent me to L&D right after he examined me to be induced. He wants to see me friday, hopefully for induction. But I feel crampy now. I am not dialated but I am really soft and thinning out. Anyone have membranes stripped? And if so, what did it feel like and how long did it take to go into labor after words. And were you dialated when they were stripped?

Can you have Diabetes and still eat eggs, Ice cream and Mexican food?

Peace be thy Journey asked:

My mother in law is telling my husband she is always dying. She is always suffering from something, last year she was walking down the street and her lung collapsed and she went into the doctors office and he reinflated her lung. (please as if), however, she came over this past weekend and is saying she has diabetes. I know a little about diabetes but definitely not everything.

Sat morn we ate at Denny’s-My mother in law ate a sausage, bacon, cheese omlet with rye toast/butter. Later for dinner we ate Mexican food.

Sun morning we ate at Bob Evans-again my mother in law had a cheese omlet with bacon, rye toast/butter. Later that same day a chocolate Ice cream cone from dairy queen. Dinner, she had salad with dressing and a couple of chicken strips.

My question is even in the rarest forms can someone with diabetes eat all of this and never once testing their blood levels? My mother in law said she takes one pill in the morning and that is when she tests her sugar levels but doesn’t have to any other times?

Does this sound true or correct?

Thanks in advance-I just hate my husband always feeling guilty.

kit-kat420 asked:

I have type 2 diabetes, since I was diagnosed before I got my insurance plan, they call it a pre existing condition and wont cover any of the cost of test strips. I have a one touch ultra mini. I need to find cheaper test strips. I am paying 98 dollars for 100 of them now, and I have to check 3 times a day. Any ideas?
