Risk of Infection?
Filed Under Blood Glucose Strips | 3 Comments
Hi, i recently has my blood glucose levels checked.
The nurse didnt use a needle, but one of those small things that pricks ur finger. After she pricked my finger, a pool of blood came out of my finger. Then she used one of those diabetes glucouse level machines with the strip of paper hanging from the top (diabetics use these) to absorbed the blood.
I think she did not change the strip from the last patient and used the same previous strip to absorb my blood. Its is likely that there was blood on the previous test strip and it came in contact with blood coming out of the prick of my finger.
Is it poosible to transmit any viruses like AIDS from this mistake?

What is the effect on blood glucose results if the test strip is expired?
Filed Under Blood Glucose Strips | 1 Comment
I only test occasionally because of a family history. I have strips that expired in April of this year. If the result is false, is it likely to be higher or lower than the true value?

can I use Accu-chek aviva equipment and Accu-chek advantage strips for checking boold sugar levels?

I have Accu Chek Aviva Meter, and I bought Accu-chek Advantage II strips to determine the blood glucose levels. I don’t know if I can use the ‘Accu-chek Advantage II’ strips for Accu-chek Aviva Meter (same company manufactures it!)

My 14 month old has had several symptoms of hypoglycemia including tremors when eating, wakes in the night suddenly and very hungry and sweaty… lethargy, wakes in the morning very grumpy (out of character for her, as she is a happy-laid-back baby) and feels better within 30 mins of breakfast. I bought a blood glucose meter. Also ketone strips just to be sure she wasnt showing signs of being diabetic (she has been thirsty and urinating a lot more than usual, but we live in GA)– the ketone strips were neg. so she isnt spilling ketones into her urine… she hasnt gotten over 109 in 3 days with her blood glucose.
Someone recommended trying a “sugar load” test, here is what happened:
9am-before breakfast- BG was 51
-fed oatmeal with honey + 1 cookie
930am-BG level was 109
10am-BG was 69
11am-BG was 95
is this reactive hypoglycemia? can this be alleviated by diet? is this a sign of pre-diabetes?
I will be taking her into the Doc but wanted some advice/info in the mean time.
Thanks.

WHERE CAN I FIND LOW COST DIABETIC SUPPLIES?
Abbott Diabetes Care Patient Assistance Program
This program assists financially disadvantaged individuals who meet certain income criteria. The Abbott Diabetes Care application can be found at www.rxassist.org/providers/documents/AbbottDiabetesCare_000.pdf or call 866-224-8887.
Bayer
Bayer offers a one time startup/upgrade (from other Bayer meters) kit–CONTOUR® Blood Glucose Monitoring System that includes a small number of strips. Advocates consider the price of the strips to be expensive for individuals without health insurance.
IPump.org, Inc. (www.ipump.org) offers limited reimbursement for diabetes medications, supplies, and insulin to persons who qualify under their “ERMA” (Emergency Request for Medical Assistance) program.

I did’t understand anything?

(30 Points) Manufacturers of blood-glucose meters routinely test large lots of the “test strips” used in their meters with standard glucose solutions for quality-control purposes. The analysis report included in one lot of the test strips for an Accu-Chek CompactTM glucometer is shown in the small table below. Answer the questions posed. [I believe that the actual unit involved is the clinically common, but weird, unit of mg/dL.]
Control Range Mean
Low 35-65 50
High 323-437 380
(a) (5 Points) Assume that the “Range” indicated for the Low and High glucose Control standards represent ± 3σ for a rather large number of replicate measurements on this lot of test strips. What fraction (or %) of all measurements should fall within the assumed Range of ± 3σ around the Mean.
