Does anyone know if it’s okay to keep my diabetic blood glucose test strips in the refriegerator? Or is that too cold for them? I think it was too hot for some other ones I had to be out and they got damaged. It is very hot in California right now. It’s 110 degrees today! I’m worried about keeping them out.

How to test for glucose levels?
Filed Under Blood Glucose Strips | 4 Comments
Doctor says I tested positive for diabetes but won’t subscribe monitor or anything. Diabetes runs in my family and when I told him this his comment was quit eating fruit, pasta, breads….
How is that supposed to monitor my levels????? Does anyone know where I can get a blood glucose monitor that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg to get the strips and lancets? I don’t have health insurance.
Thanks!

Why is the price of blood glucose test strips (for diabetics) so high?
Filed Under Blood Glucose Strips | 5 Comments
I know something about economics, and usually when something is cheap to produce, competition brings the price down eventually. But blood glucose test strips, which are used in little meters to test one’s blood sugar, are between $ 30 cents and $1.00 for each strip. Yet (I believe) the cost to make them is probably a couple cents.

I’m not drawing enough blood from my fingers for my testing strip. Any advice regarding this?
Filed Under Blood Glucose Strips | 15 Comments
I would like to take the glucose tests from my fingers. I use the Abbott glucose meter called Optium. The lancet gauge is 30. I am very new at using meters as I was just diagnosed with type 2 diabetes on February 29th. I will be seeing my physician on April l5th, but I wanted to know what my glucose levels are currently, so I purchased a meter.

I found one in the elevator at work (not used) and decided maybe I should try it and see if I have diabetes or not. What do I do? Just prick my finger and put blood on it? Then what?

I’m having problems with my insurance company not covering my test strips. They said they can only cover a certain amount a month so I cannot get any more for 2 and a half weeks. I see the doctor again 6 days before I can get a re-fill. I know the doctor is going to be mad. I cannot measure my blood glucose if I don’t have strips! I have argued with them and I have spoken to a nurse at my doctor’s office and she told me just to follow the diet and go and buy some test strips. Sorry, lady, they are $100 a box and I cannot afford that! I need an oil delivery at my house! Anyway, how would you know if your blood sugar is too high or too low? I’ve been keeping it well under control, but now that I have no test strips I cannot monitor my levels. Has anything like this ever happened to anyone on here? What did you do? I’m worried the doctor will put me on insulin or something just because he cannot monitor my levels and there is nothing I can really do about it! I haven’t needed insulin at all, and I don’t think I will, but what can I do? Also, did any of you have to change your diets at all as pregnancy progresses? I’m 33 weeks now, and I’ve been on this GD diet for close to four weeks and my levels have been generally in the same area, and I always keep to my diet. Could the diet change? Like, say you can have up to 45g of carbs for all three meals which I do, but then at say week 35, could this change to where you can only have 30? That 45 is too much? I can’t explain what I mean, hopefully someone can understand my rambling! Haha. Thanks in advance if you can answer!!
I do stay on top of it, I eat exactly as the diet tells me to and I follow it all perfectly. I cannot afford them, regardless of the reason. Nobody can, diabetes is highway robbery.
I’m looking into the ReliOn right now, thanks.

Blood Glucose Monitors?
Filed Under Blood Glucose Strips | 3 Comments
I bought a ReliOn Glucose Monitor & I didnt calibrate it before I used it. Now All that will show up is MEM - - - or If I put the calibrateing strip in it shows E-6 which is “Calibrater Error.” So Did I mess the monitor up or is there something I can do to fix it.
Thanks to the People who answered it was helpful and I fixed it. I accidently set the date to 11/7/2020! So it made the strips look expired! But I fixed it! Thanks to All!!!

I’m not sure if this should be in science - chemistry or health - medicine.
All my searches keep taking me to insurance companies and doctors offices. I was hoping someone can help me locate information, I’m looking for specifics here.
I know blood sugar monitoring usually involves a test strip coated with a reagent. This reagent changes colors in reaction to contact with glucose and the machine just evaluates the color of the paper and converts that color in to a number. I think….
My questions are: what is the most common reagent, what will it react to (glucose, sucrose, any other polysacharides?). How sensitive is it? How do the new machines that don’t use test strips work?
Could I in theory test pop with a home blood sugar monitor? What would happen if I tested coke vs. pepsi. Would I be able to tell which is more sugary? Obviously the number wouldn’t be anything but if one has a higher number would at least be an indication right?
