Ok so my friend gave me a bottle with a few chemstrip 10 md strips in it because I thought I had a kidney infection. I have a very long history of kidney infections, I used to get several every year since I was very small… from the results that I know how to read I know that this does point to a kidney infection- but I am not sure what everything else means.

I do also have all the symptoms that I usually have ie: frequent urination that tingles very badly and is extremely uncomfortable. It also feels like I can not empty my bladder. Sharp shooting pains in my back, right side and also in the right front of my abdomen closer to the side… I had a fever yesterday and chills but also hot flashes today and yesterday. I did a strip yesterday and the day before but the only things that really showed anything abnormal was : Leukocytes + and Blood/ Hemoglobin was about 250 Ery/

I just did another strip and they read as follows:
Specific Gravity-1.020
pH-5
Leukocytes - ++
Nitrite- Pos
Protein- 30
Glucose- Normal
Ketones- Neg
Urobilinogen- Normal
Bilirubin- +
Blood / Hemoglobin- About 250 ery/

Do these results require an ER visit… like now? Or should I wait… I have a dr apt on wednesday. Also I am not menstrating nor have I done so within the last week…

I have preexisting diabetes, 36+weeks, and no measuring ultrasounds since between 18-20 weeks when I found out what we were having. On Monday, I saw my OB, then went for my non stress fetal monitoring. They done blood work during the monitoring to check for preeclampsia, urine by catheter. The L&D nurses said my strip was the best one they had seen all day. But they were concerned that I haven’t had an ultrasound for measurement since 18-20 weeks, except for a Fetal Echo nor had my cervix been checked that day. Is it normal not to have another ultrasound this late for a preexisting diabetic or my cervix checked at 36+? My OB barely said 20 words to me at my last appt. also. She didn’t even use a measuring tape for my uterus, just felt a little. She asked baby active, head is down, no reason to check you, go to L&D for test, morning glucose? Then walked out of the room. Should I be very concerned? Last week she didn’t even want to see me in her office anymore except L&D for NS
Should I be concerned? I am at a total loss..
I should mention that I called my insurance company nurse, and she called the OB, talked to her nurse. She never explained to me why she just wanted me at l&d for my non stress monitoring, and why I didn’t need to come back to her office anymore for my weekly check ups. Well, she called me the next day ripped me a new one, and said maybe I should find another OB because I jeopardized our patient/dr. relationship for talking to my insurance company’s nurse and wanted to know why I turned her in. I told her that I was just concerned. I was crying so hard while on the phone with the OB, that it didn’t concern her in the slightest. Every dr. that I called will not take me because there is a chance this one will be on call if I go into labor. I am scheduled for a repeat C-Section in early May, because the OB does not want me to go to my due date. I am concerned because of the size of what my little girl maybe. If she is big or small for the gestational age.

My dog has appointment monday with the vet,I suspect that he has diabetis.Excessive hunger, thirst, urination and he has been more aggressive and intolerent of the other pets and he never use to like that. He’s 8-9yrs old. What will the vet do? Draw blood ,urine, will he try a diet change first before putting him on medicaton? What is the normal blood glucose range in a dog? Can you use people urine strips to check it? I know the vet will answer my questions monday,I just wanted to get “Answer” people experience with their pets and the desease. It sure would be nice to just have to change his food, but due to his age and looking back it has been going on for a while. Thanks for your knowledgeable answers!

My son is 14. Has recently began wetting the bed. My husband (not his biological father) is diabetic. I checked my sons’ glucose level and it was 270. I called my Ped. to let them know, and also told them about his wetting the bed. They had us go to the lab the next AM for bloodwork. His triglycerides and his cholesterol are very high. And his fasting blood sugar was 117. (they said a bit elevated for his age) Today he got off the bus and was walking around dazed almost. I checked his glucose and he was 60. I had him eat a snack size (The small bags you might get from trick or treating) of sweet tarts. He ate that bag. An hour later, we checked it again and it was at 272. I bought keytone strips and checked that, there was a trace. Ped. has ordered an A1C and a repeat of all bloodwork done yesterday. (we do that in the AM) What would cause a 14 year old childs triglycerides and cholesterol to be so high. (his cholesterol was 220!) He is not overweight.
We do have a history of heart disease in our family, along with diabetes. Is it normal for his blood sugar to go from 60 to 272 in just an hour? That seems very extreme to me. Also, sometimes his glucose can be normal, and other times it is in the 200’s. Is this typical for juvenile diabetes? And does what would the triglycerides have to do with this? I’m scared to death…and am not waiting so patiently till Monday to find out results…… His reg. Ped was not in the office and the nurse told me she would call me on Mon to discuss. After his blood sugar was so low and then really high, I called back and asked another Ped to look at it. Thats when he called back and wanted a repeat of all bloodwork. I aksed what the A1C was and they had not ordered one. But will do one tomorrow morning when we go into the lab. Should I be concerned with my Pediatric group? I know I’m full of questions. But I’m clueless and scared here! Please, any advice is appreciated!
There were not only a couple high glucose tests! There were 2-4 a day ABOVE 200 over a 6 day period! (And these were 2 hours after eating OR fasting!) with the ONLY exception being that I took it an hour after him eating to raise his glucose. And the only reason I did that was to make sure it wasn’t still low.
SInce I’ve discovered his high glucose levels, I’ve monitored his carbs and his sweets. (Until I know, he is on the same foods and diets as my husband who is also diabetic!) HE IS NOT overweight! Even when he eats proper foods, his blood sugar is all over the map! (Lowest being 60 highest being 303)
He is a very active 14 year old child. Skateboarding, roller blading, bike riding…occational gamer and movie buff. He doesn’t always eat the proper foods. Especially when I’m not around, but he is an AVERAGE 14 yr old.
Hubby is type 2! His glucose is easily controlled by his diet and excersice routine. (If he eats extra carbs or anything sweet, I know immediatly! lol) His Doc said this is classic type 2.

Eileen asked:

This is my third time around with gestational diabetes. The first time was undiagnosed (my son was born w/low blood sugar), the second time was diagnosed late, and my son was born at almost 9lbs two days late with perfect blood sugar since I watched what I ate like a hawk near delivery time especially. Okay, so third time around, I’m in a new state where apparently they are much more serious about GD. I have a new glucose tester (thank goodness for alternative test sites in lieu of fingertip testing!) and for the first time ever, I’ve got Ketone test strips. I’d used them once upon a time when I was on Atkins briefly, but I used my first one this morning, and it showed trace amounts of ketones in my urine. My question is this: How much does there have to be before it’s a concern? The nurse who prescribed the tests told me that one of her doctors puts folks on insulin JUST for the ketones, regardless of glucose numbers. I don’t want to do insulin if I can avoid it. Any thoughts?

I am 28 weeks pregnant. Due April 25th. This is my 3rd pregnancy and never had this problem.

Last week I failed my glucose test

1 hour 147

Went back in to do a fasting 3 hour test

Fasting 96
1 hour 214
2 hour 179
3 hour 149

So now they have me on a diet. 3 meals 3 snacks Counting my carbs grams and meat in take. I check my blood sugar levels during the day and my keytones levels when I wake up. I am doing good with the sugar levels I have problems before dinner and the 2 hour test after dinner some times. But the past two mornings I have failed my keytones test. With high levels as dark as the strip can get.

Keytones this is what I know about them
Ketones are produced when your body gets energy by breaking down fat instead of sugar.
Ketones become a problem when you do not have enough insulin to control ketone production properly or you are truly starving because of lack of food. When too many ketones are produced too quickly they upset the delicate balance of the body’s chemistry and can lead to a problem called diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA).

My question is what is the next step? What will they have me do, or is there any more test coming up? Just a little curious want more info. I am posting this in two groups pregnancy and health. I do eat what my diet tells me to the t. I am a little ocd about following rules so I know I am doing it right.
Thank you for all the help!
I am calling the Dr in the AM and going in Tuesday.

In fact, the entire battery of tests (thryoid, liver, kidney functions) were great. He gave me a test kit and 3 wks of blood tests average 110 (152 highest after eating ice cream/88 lowest). Yet, glucose urine test strips still occasionally show sugar in urine. I started out with some suspected diabetic symptoms (dry mouth/thirst/frequent urination) but they went away after one week. I’m schedule for a Glucose Tolerance Test this week. I am a 44/F 135lbs non-smoking, very healthy diet, etc.. Any ideas what’s up?
I don’t eat sweets (I ate ice cream last week which I do once a month if that), no candy/cookies, no soda pop but I do like carbs. However, ever since sugar starting showing up I’ve cut back on breads, starches, etc. Still sugar in urine.
